How to Program and Clone a BKR5000 Radio Using BK Technologies Software

The BK Technologies BKR5000 is a powerful, rugged portable radio widely used in public safety and wildfire communications. Whether you're deploying a new fleet or maintaining existing radios, learning how to program and clone your BKR5000s is essential. Here’s a step-by-step guide to get you started with the BK Technologies programming software.

What You’ll Need

Before you begin, make sure you have the following:

  • At least one BKR5000 radio

  • A BK Technologies programming cable (typically the KAA0701 USB cable)

  • A Windows PC with the BKR5000 programming software installed

  • USB drivers for the programming cable (if prompted during setup)

Step 1: Read the Configuration from the Source Radio

  1. Connect your source BKR5000 (the one with the correct settings) to your PC using the programming cable.

  2. Turn on the radio.

  3. Launch the BKR5000 programming software on your PC.

  4. From the top menu, click Radio > Read from Radio.

  5. The software will retrieve the radio’s current programming and load it into the interface.

  6. Once the read is complete, save the configuration by clicking File > Save As. Name the file something descriptive like BKR5000_Wildland_Template.cloning.

Step 2: Write the Configuration to a Target Radio

  1. Disconnect the source radio and connect your target radio.

  2. Turn on the target radio.

  3. In the software, open the previously saved template file if it isn’t already open.

  4. Go to Radio > Write to Radio.

  5. The programming file will be transferred to the new radio. Once complete, you’ll see a confirmation message.

Note: If your radios use unique IDs or encryption keys, remember to adjust these per unit before writing.

Step 3: Repeat for Additional Radios

You can now repeat the write process for as many radios as needed. This method ensures consistent channel mapping and configuration across your entire fleet.

Troubleshooting Tips

  • Radio not detected? Ensure drivers are properly installed and the radio is powered on.

  • Errors during read/write? Try using a different USB port or cable and make sure no other programs are interfering.

Final Thoughts

Programming and cloning the BKR5000 is a straightforward process once you're familiar with the software. It saves time, reduces errors, and ensures uniform communication settings across all your devices.
